GEAR

Jump rope is the most calorie-efficient cardio modality available. A study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise and conducted at San Diego State University found that 10 minutes of jumping at 120 RPM burns roughly 150 calories — equivalent to 30 minutes of moderate jogging at 5.5 mph. Separate research from Dr. Yuri Verkhoshansky's laboratory documented that consistent rope jumping improves ankle stiffness and reactive strength by 12-15%, benefiting runners and court sport athletes. The equipment costs $10-$40 and fits in a backpack.

Rope material determines feel and speed. PVC ropes are cheap but drag in humid air and tangle easily. Steel cable ropes are fast and durable but punish mistakes — a missed rep at full speed leaves welts. Beaded ropes are slowest but most forgiving for beginners learning timing and rhythm.

Our speed rope pick uses a coated steel cable (2.5mm diameter) with ball-bearing handles that spin freely. The thin cable cuts through air with minimal drag, enabling speeds above 200 RPM for double-unders. Handle length is 7 inches — long enough for control, short enough to avoid torque.

For general fitness, our pick uses a 5mm PVC cord that provides slightly more feedback than steel cable. The weight of the rope makes it easier to maintain rhythm during longer sessions. Handles include foam grips that absorb sweat without becoming slippery.

Sizing matters: stand on the center of the rope with one foot. The handles should reach your armpits. Too long and the rope drags and catches on the ground. Too short and you have to hunch forward, which restricts breathing. Most ropes are adjustable — cut to length and secure with a set screw.

Start with two-minute rounds, 30-second rest, for five rounds. Progress by adding 30 seconds per round each week. Once you can jump continuously for 10 minutes, introduce speed intervals: 30 seconds fast, 30 seconds moderate. This protocol builds cardiovascular fitness faster than steady-state alone.
