Creatine: The Most Studied Supplement in Sports

Creatine monohydrate has been studied in over 500 peer-reviewed trials. The mechanism is simple. Your muscles store creatine as phosphocreatine, which regenerates ATP — the molecular fuel for muscle contraction — during short, intense efforts. Research from Dr. Paul Greenhaff's Muscle Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Nottingham showed that supplementation increases intramuscular creatine stores by 20-40%, providing more fuel for efforts lasting 5-30 seconds.

The cognitive benefits were strongest in vegetarians and older adults, populations with lower baseline brain creatine stores. A separate 2023 Journal of Affective Disorders meta-analysis (k=5, n=232) found that creatine as an adjunct to SSRIs produced moderate improvements in treatment-resistant depression. Creatine is increasingly recognized as a general health supplement, not just an athletic one.
